For some caregivers the sum total of the advice they’ve gotten is just “do your best.” But what does that mean, especially regarding caregiving? Believe it or not, it really does mean that you should just do the best that you can with where you are.
Don’t Expect Superhuman Results from Yourself
Very often caregivers expect that they’re going to be able to get everything done, all the time, and get it done perfectly. But that’s not reality. You’re human and you have human limitations. That’s something that is essential for you to remember throughout your time as a caregiver. When you can account for that one fact, it will pay off for you in so many ways.
You’re Always Going to Be Learning
Every day brings new lessons and new information. And as a caregiver, you’re going to be learning all the time, whether you really want to be or not. Depending on your senior’s health, information around keeping her healthy might be the majority of what you’re learning. But there’s so much more, too. The more that you learn, the better you’ll be able to tackle everything that comes your way.
You Need to Reach out More Often for Help
One of the big mistakes you might be making is not reaching out for help when you should. It’s vital that you have extra hands throughout your caregiving experience. It’s not always possible for that help to come from family members, though, which is where home care providers come in. They can help you with a variety of tasks and situations without the same amount of stress that can be associated with help from family.
You’re Going to Have Better Days and Not-so-great Days
Every day isn’t going to be wine and roses, unfortunately. It would be great if that were true, but some days you’re not going to be at your best and that’s okay. No one can be perfect and on their game every single day. That’s part of you being human, so go easy on yourself. You might just find that when you’re more compassionate with yourself it’s easier to be an awesome caregiver.
When you try to push yourself harder all the time you’re going to get frustrated. Do what you can, when you can, and give yourself the grace to slow down now and again. You’re there to help your senior, not to be a perfect caregiver all the time.
